Resilient 10 Man Aalst Lose Debut BPL Match

Over 23,000 fans were in attendance at Aalststadion for Red Star Aalst's debut match in the Belgian Premier League, and watched their home club lose a close one 1-0 against the visiting Lazer Sharx. Things got off to an inauspicious start when Adrian-James Castro received an immediate red card for a harsh foul in the 30th minute. Despite that, Red Star stayed defensively sound and took a 0-0 score to half. That remained the score until the 69th minute when Henri-Joseph Bogaerts scored on an impressive header, getting the lone goal of the match.

Club President Harmanus Maes called the return of premier football to Aalststadion an incredible experience. "It felt like a celebration of football's past and present" said Maes. "We had the revival of an old rivalry tonight in front of a great crowd that included several members of the original FC Aalst team. It really leaves me excited for things to come with this club."

Manager Rickard Oberlander acknowledged his team's effort during the post-match press conference, but lamented the red card. "Obvioiusly, a lack of discipline is something that you are going to pay for" said Oberlander, referring to the Castro red card. "After we went down a man, I do believe we did a great job holding our shape and limiting the opponent's chances. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get a result in the end. There are positives to take from today, but a lot that we still need to work on."

Red Star goes on the road next week where they will face Bruccels FC.

Sportvereniging Red Star Aalst: Season 103 Preview

There is a buzz around Aalststadion, as the legendary venue will see its first Belgian Premier League action in almost 70 years. Sportvereniging Red Star Aalst make their top level league debut a week today, giving everyone a date to really look forward to amidst the chaos of the moment. Construction workers are putting the final touches on the stadium, which will start the season with a capacity of around 20,000 seats with room to grow as the season progresses. Meanwhile at the club store, black and red kits, scarves, and flags have become hot ticket items, routinely testing the manufacturers' capacity to keep up with demand.

During a recent interview, Red Star's President Harmanus Maes put words to the feeling of anticipation in the region. "East Flanders has been starved for top-flight football for a very long time" said Maes. "The original FC Aalst was an incredible club, but they are long gone. Now we are here to take up that mantle and try to bring back championship calibre football to Aalststadion. At least in the long term. For this season, the goal is to go out there, grow a strong rapport with the fan base, and see if we can't cause some headaches for the bigger clubs."

Manager Rickard Oberlander stressed that while this is a team new to the BPL, his expectations were always going to remain high. "Yes, we are young and we lack the experience that some of the other sides are going to have" said Oberlander. "But, we can still expect the very best out of our players. We can still outwork our opponents. We can still limit our mistakes. Win or lose, I want everyone to know for certain that we left everything that we could out on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. Anything less is simply not something I am willing to accept."

Red Star Aalst will be playing out of the 5-3-2 formation this year, hoping to remain sound in the back to limit the pressure that will be certainly be coming from more experienced forwards on opposing sides. Despite a reasonable amount of expected rotation, Oberlander's primary lineup is expected to look like this:

In goal, captain Archibald Friedland will get the majority of the work, with semi-pro veteran Alfred Strasser spelling him on rest days. Hendricus-Jacobus Peeters will take on the anchor role in the back with youngster Wijtze Castro and amateur holdover Aaron Strasser flanking him. On the wings, Berlyn Pasch and Bridge Fisher will be expected to get the ball forward and provide width on both attack and in defence. New signing Templetun Ward joins the established midfield of Adrian-James Castro and Reinoud Verschueren, with Reinoud's fraternal twin brother Sibrant serving as a key substitute. Up front, both Claudie Huntington and Larenzo Kirk will be making their debuts in professional football, and will be expected to be productive as soon as possible.

Friedland has seemingly taken to his new captain role well, and is optimistic about the season. "This obviously isn't a year where we are expecting to challenge for a title" said Friedland. "That doesn't mean, though, that we expect to just roll over and let everyone trounce us. We know that we are capable of stealing some games, grinding out some favourable results, and giving the fans something to cheer about. I think that there is a lot of youth here, and we are hungry to learn and to grow, but also to compete at a higher level than anyone expects of us."

In their first ever BPL match, Red Star Aalst plays host to the revived Lazer Sharx, who return to Aalststadion for the first time since they were battling FC Aalst for league titles those many years ago.

Friedland Named Captain of Red Star

Archibald Friedland was introduced in a press event today as the first captain of Red Star Aalst. The 22 year old German goalkeeper was one of the more experienced players that the team signed, as youth seems to be the plan early on.

Manager Rickard Oberlander praised Friedland's work ethic and leadership skills while speaking to the media. "Archibald has all of the qualities that you could want from a captain" said Oberlander. "He has a great mentality and is always working hard on the training grounds. He really sets a good example for the rest of the team in all that he does."

For his part, Friedland was honoured to be given the captaincy. "Getting to wear the armband is an amazing distinction" said Friedland. "It's a responsibility that I don't take lightly and I hope that I am able to serve it well. Certainly looking forward to the challenge."

Initial Free Agency Signings for Red Star

The only signing for the club so far with top level pro experience, defender Hendricus-Jacobus Peeters has 3 years of experience for 3 different clubs in the BPL. The 23 year old Belgian has 114 match appearances, 9 goals, and zero bookings. Peeters will likely hold a centre back role in Red Star's staring XI.

Meet the Coaching Staff

After the takeover of Red Star Aalst by JR Wellington Sports Management and their subsequent approval for the Belgian Premier League, new President Harmanus Maes quickly went to work hiring the club's new manager. The club eventually hired Rickard Oberlander for the role. The 60 year old German was the manager for Munchen Buncher in the Bundesliga for 9 seasons from S93-S101. Prior to that, he was the inaugural manager for Bundesliga club Cola Street FC for 9 seasons from S84-S92, when he was let go from the club. As a player, Oberlander was a defender in top tier football for 18 seasons, including a 10 year stint with BPL club FC Big Blasters where he scored 33 goals in 337 league matches while failing to draw a single booking.

In a recent interview, Oberlander spelled out his philosophy as a manager. "The keys to maximizing success at the top level is discipline and fitness" said Oberlander. "Technique and raw athleticism are sometimes to great to overcome, but I strive to get the most out of the team that I have before me. Winning takes a lot of hard work, and my expectations are high. I expect nothing less than maximum effort here at Red Star."

Assistant manager Alvy Heinemann joins Oberlander in Aalst after working as his assistant for 3 years at Munchen Buncher. The 45 year old German had a successful career as a defender, spending 14 years playing for a variety of top flight clubs. Heinemann ended his career with a 6 year stint playing for BPL powerhouse Wonderkid Sports Authority, where he won a pair of league championships.

Former star striker Alco Moreau joined Red Star as the first team coach, having previously worked for the club in a smaller coaching role. The 40 year old Belgian stands an imposing 6'7 and spent a 10 year journeyman career playing for a variety of BPL clubs. Moreau scored 177 goals in 222 BPL matches, eclipsing 30 goals in a season 4 times in his career.

Belgian goalkeeping coach Altoni Wauters came to Red Star after previously serving as the goalkeeping coach for BPL club Greinstraat from S98-S100 before that club folded. Before his coaching career, the 38 year old Wauters played 13 seasons in the BPL for a number of clubs playing in 315 league matches in net.

Finally, the club's President Harmanus Maes has been serving in a front office role in football for over 30 years. The 65 year old Belgian had a promising career as a midfielder cut short in his 7th BPL season after a severe leg injury suffered in the middle of a match prevented him from playing any longer. Before his current role, Maes was most recently the Chief Financial Officer for BPL club Urbana Hawks FC from S96-S101.

Red Star Aalst Joins Belgian Premier League

At a press event today, Sportvereniging Red Star Aalst was officially confirmed as the newest club in the Belgian Premier League. Commissioner Herenbolt Heylen was on hand to make the announcement alongside representatives from the club and from ownership group JR Wellington Sports Management.

Eadburt Clement, the Director of Football for the sports management team spoke about the history of the company in Belgian football, and the desire to recapture that glory. "It is amazing to announce the return of top flight football to East Flanders" said Clement. "FC Aalst may well have been the most successful club in the original iteration of our management company, winning 6 league titles. Our hope is that Red Star can carry that torch and bring more silverware to this region. I believe that we have the team in place to hit the ground running."

Red Star Club President Harmanus Maes spoke about the priorities of the club, and first among those being the restoration of Aalststadion. "At one time, this stadium was a jewel in the footballing world" said Maes. "The years out of the Premier League have meant that it has fallen into disrepair. As it stands, the majority of the seats had to be removed. Our plan will be to slowly renovate and rebuild the stadium to become a facility worthy of a modern professional side. We are also working on putting together a staff, both on the coaching side and in the office, and are going to be moving quickly into training in advance of the season. There is a lot to do, but we feel confident that we can get everything ready for opening kickoff."

S.V. Red Star will get their first taste of Belgian Premier League play when they play host to the Lazer Sharx at the start of the new season in a few months' time.
